Queensland Representative School Sport (QRSS)

Queensland home-educated children can participate in state representative sports managed by Queensland Representative School Sport (QRSS).

Registered home education students are explicitly permitted to take part in district and regional sporting activities. This provides a foundational pathway towards progressing to higher levels of selection. For example, in athletics, the Queensland Athletics All Schools Track and Field Championships (which serve as selection trials for Australian All Schools) are open to home-educated students, with no requirement beyond being registered for home education in Queensland.

Progression to state representative teams often involves performing well at district or regional levels, or through open trials and affiliated club competitions. Home-educated athletes can compete in community-based programmes such as Little Athletics Queensland and progress to regional and state championships.

Can registered homeschoolers compete in school representative sports?

Yes, registered homeschoolers (not provisional) are eligible to compete in school sports. They go directly to District Trials. If they qualify or are selected, they progress to Regional Trials.

How do homeschooled students nominate for District Trials?

Unlike Distance Education (DE) students, who are nominated by their school, homeschoolers must nominate themselves.

How do I find out which region and district we belong to?

If you are unsure of your region and district, check which schools are near you and identify their district. Alternatively, contact your regional office for confirmation. You can visit the Queensland School Sport website for guidance.

Each region has a website listing district details.
Some districts provide a yearly calendar with trial dates and sport convenor contact information.

What is the deadline for District Trial nominations?

Nominations typically close 1-2 weeks before the trial or carnival. For example, if a swimming trial is on 13th February, nominations may be due by 6th February.

Can the QHE provide confirmation of registration for sport nominations?

Yes, the QHE can confirm your child’s homeschool registration in writing to the relevant School Sport Officer if required.
However, QHE does not sign ‘school’ documentation forms, so parents should allow enough time to request and receive this confirmation.

What should students wear for District Trials?

Most students wear their school sports uniform.
Homeschoolers can wear a plain sports shirt or a club uniform, depending on the sport.

How do students qualify for Regional Trials?

Each sport has different selection criteria. For example:
- Cross Country: Usually the fastest 5-12 runners qualify, depending on the district.
- Swimming: The fastest 4-6 swimmers per event qualify, but they must meet qualifying times.
- Team Sports: Selection panels assess players based on short games and skill drills.

What happens if my child progresses to Regional Trials?

No additional nomination is needed (the district handles this).
Additional fees and forms may be required.
Some districts provide uniforms, while others may require purchasing one.

What should I expect at Regional Trials?

For team sports, selectors observe short games and skill drills.
They may form Possibles vs. Probables teams to finalise selections.
For individual sports like swimming and cross country, qualifying times and rankings determine advancement to the State Championships.

What happens if my child qualifies for State Championships?

If selected, you will receive forms, be invited to a parent information session, and your child may need to try on uniform samples.
